The Bose sound link colour was released in July 2013 and is still widely popular all around the world. The idea is that it is small, lightweight and easy to use, while still giving that full sound regardless of its size. It is relatively expensive, priced at about £120 (mid-range) which seems strange when you could buy a much larger speaker for similar value. But that’s not the point, not everybody wants big speakers, also bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better! If you’ve bought bluetooth speakers before you should know this.

Design and Features

The sound link colour speaker, as you would expect, comes in a variety of different colours ranging from blue, mint, red, black and white. The speaker itself is very small being just 13.4 cm tall, 12.8 cm wide and 5.3 cm in depth. It weighs just over half a kilo meaning that overall the speaker is extremely small and still reasonably light. As it is compact and made out of tough plastic, although it is not recommended to drop it, it’s most likely to survive a shortfall. The outer casing is smooth but there are some rubber strips on the side and top of the case for extra grip when moving it so hopefully you won’t do some unwarranted crash testing.

It is obvious in plain sight that Bose have attempted and succeeded in making the controls simple. On the top there are six buttons which control the power, Bluetooth, auxiliary in and last of all the volume. Now as you may have figured out already, there are multiple ways to connect to your music source. The first way is using Bluetooth by pressing the button on the top and then syncing to your speaker with your mobile device. The signal range is around 30-40ft which is more than enough signal strength in case you walk out of the room. The second way is using an auxiliary in cable which is probably the best way because it saves battery life. Unfortunately Bose do not supply such cable so you have to find/buy your own. The battery life is around eight hours, depending on the volume, whether using Bluetooth and of course the age of the battery. Bose supply a wall charging adapter with a USB cable to plug in to the micro-USB to recharge a drained battery. This can take up to 70 minutes to fully recharge the battery which isn’t long at all. If no Bluetooth devices are connected the speaker will automatically turn off within half an hour, useful if you are good at forgetting things.

Sound Quality

The Bose sound link colour is considered a step down from the more expensive Bose sound link mini. This is because at a louder volume music can distort slightly, especially with more complex tracks. However don’t let this fool you because if you are playing music at a normal volume it sounds fine and outputs punchy bass, filling a small to medium room with sound. In the user manual it is recommended to keep the back of the speaker placed near a wall (not directly) to increase bass response. A lot of other reviews didn’t actually do this and complained there was lack of bass; now you know why this is! It also mentioned to listen from the front, therefore it isn’t smart to place in the centre of the room if you want the optimum sound experience. Unfortunately Bose haven’t given us any technical specifications for what’s actually in the speaker, as with all their products, so we can’t give any scientific comparisons with other models. If you like Bose you want better sound quality it is recommended to get the sound link mini. However other features exceed the soundlink mini with the soundlink colour such as a 20%  difference battery life. The price is greater too so it is up to you which one go for, there is still reason to buy the Soundlink colour regardless of whether the sound quality is 100%. If you like to blast music out loud, this bluetooth speaker isn’t really for you because the sound quality reduction will be noticable.

Sound was incredible as was battery life, everyone asked where I had got it from. Charges up really quickly and lasts ages. I absolutely love this for it's amazing sound quality, ridiculously easy set up, variety of use and portability. So glad I bought it.

Great little speaker. I bought this as it seemed much lighter than the Soundlink Mini. Super bass - vocals not as distinct as I expected on some tracks - so worth testing with your own favourites first.

Unfortunately, when I tested this unit against the $200 Mini, there just was no comparison, no matter how much I tried to convince myself that it would do.

Because of its portability and oversize sound, this little unit has all of the positives of the "boom boxes" some of us remember from our youth, with the added benefit of smaller dimensions and freedom from C batteries.
