• Headphone amp is bare-bones
US experts V-MODA recently launched their first wireless speaker, the Remix. It’s not your average speaker though, as it also includes an integrated headphone amp. Many wireless speakers go for the budget approach, but V-MODA have presented a high fidelity product priced at $300.
There’s a fair bit in the package which differentiates the Remix from the competition. Let’s get stuck into it.
V-MODA Remix features
The Remix offers 10 hours of wireless playback, a wireless range of 10m and a pretty standard frequency response of 20-20,000 Hz. This is presented in a compact 8.1″ x 2.5″ x 2.5″ package, which fits into a single hand easily. The unit has two 9w speakers and a passive bass reflector. Other features include an integrated mic for calls, a USB-A to USB-C charging cable 2m and the ability to daisy chain multiple Remix speakers together via the 1.4m audio cable. The charging cable is flat while the audio cable is fabric, so they are durable and tangle free.
Wireless speaker performance
The Remix sounds thick and full, both wired and wireless. Often you lose some low end when running a speaker wireless, but V-MODA have tuned the speaker to make up for this. The Remix is tuned in a modern bass and treble-boosted style, while the mids are somewhat recessed due to the big bass sound. The speaker naturally lends itself to hip hop, pop and electronic styles as a result. Changing between the wired and wireless modes can be a little glitchy while getting the speaker to re-connect wirelessly. Once it’s connected the connection is solid though.
It pumps pretty hard in a small room like a bedroom. In a larger space like my combined kitchen / lounge it works well playing some tunes for a few friends. However there is a physical limit for a speaker of this size, so don’t expect it to shake the room at a packed party or anything. There is the ability to daisy chain unlimited speakers though if you did want to get some more volume. If multiple family members/housemates had Remixes it would be a smart solution to a louder set-up when it was required. Unless that’s the case, you may as well just buy a bigger speaker set-up though.
V-MODA have had a long association with Apple and opening the package you definitely get a sense of that Apple aesthetic – everything looks great and is well thought-out. Wireless speakers usually have a funky, fun vibe to them, while the Remix is more classy. It looks like it belongs on an executive’s desk or something.
There’s two standard builds available: Aluminium and vegan leather. There’s four coloured rubber rings included in the package, which allow you to customise the speaker’s appearance. You can also order highly customised versions of the speakers. These feature 3D printed designs and a huge array of material choices, ranging from steel, fibre and even precious metals like platinium and 14k gold.
World first headphone amp / wireless speaker design
V-MODA state the Remix is the world’s first wireless speaker and headphone amp. The latter has a 3.5mm jack, so its marketed towards average consumers rather than pros (who would generally use 1/4″ jacks). Headphone amps start around $50 and decent ones are usually $150+, so having them integrated into a wireless speaker does save you the extra outlay. That said, at $300 the Remix is quite expensive for a wireless speaker, even one that sounds as good as this. It’s only worth shelling out the $300 for it if you’re going to get some use out of the headphone amp as well.
Headphone amp performance
You can run the speaker and the headphone amp simultaneously or separately, via a button on top of the speaker. The Remix seems to favour the amp when running both though, so the speaker doesn’t retain the same low end. The Remix headphone amp provides a thick, full audio experience. It provides greater depth and clarity than what you get out of a phone jack or cheap amp on standard audio products. The portable nature of the Remix also makes it handy to have as an amp. Don’t expect any multiple headphone inputs or extras as an amp – it’s a very straight-forward design.
So is it worth buying the V-MODA Remix? It’s certainly not cheap but you get a unique and hi-fi experience from the Remix. As a wireless speaker it offers satisfying audio that punches above the weight of the compact unit. It also looks great and has quality accessories. As a headphone amp, it allows to get the best out of your cans easily, both at home and out and about. The $300 outlay is only worth it if you’re going to use both the speaker and headphone amp though.
