Good Drum kits for Beginners

by Khurram2014/01/06

This is a special SoundReview entry for the young and entry level drummers who are looking for buying their first drum kit. With so many options out there, the question is, where to start? We have compiled this list of drum kits for beginners, which will hopefully put you in the right direction. Building up a drum kit is a gradual process, you need to start from a basic kit and upgrade it as you go. So that’s why your goal should be to spend the reasonable minimum right now and save the rest for upgrades later on as you progress with your drumming skills. When you go to buy your first kit remember that all that glitters isn’t gold. Never go for just the looks, there are plenty of kits with shimmery wraps and striking looks but at the entry level stage, it should be your last concern. Building and buying a quality drum kit happens over time so for the initial stages, you need to look for something cheap and durable. Here is our list of top 8 drum kits for beginners:

8. Groove Percussion 5 Piece Drum Set with Hardware and Cymbals – GDK160BLK-P

Groove Percussion 5 Piece Drum Set with Hardware and Cymbals

This is a complete set for a beginner who doesn’t want to spend a buck load of cash on his first try out. It is very convenient since you don’t have to buy anything separately. However for setting and tuning it up you will have to refer to tutorial videos as it does not come with a set-up instruction manual. The sound quality is decent, I wouldn’t say too much about it since the standard cymbals provided need to be replaced to get a decent sound out of them. The drums aren’t TOO loud, but with a decent set of skins, they do just fine for practise or a casual jam. Keep in mind that this set isn’t made for heavy hitting.

7. Pearl Rhythm Traveller Drum Sets

The beginners’ kit from Pearl is another great value set. Its compact design makes it easy to transport and rubber cymbal mufflers reduce the noise during practices, which should be good if you’re a learner, ready to reintroduce your neighbourhood to the word noise! With this kit you can always be on the go, packed for performing at gigs in no time. With the basic drums, a hi-hat and crash cymbal, this kit makes up a decent start-up set with no additional expenses necessary. Mahogany shells and double braced hardware makes it a suitable choice for learners. The throne and drum sticks are available for an additional price.

6. Sound Percussion Pro 5-Piece Shell Pack with Chrome Hardware Wine Red

Sound Percussion Pro 5-Piece

This Sound Percussion Pro 5 is very popular among beginners and has everything you need to start playing drums. It is fairly easy to assemble and tune. It has a good quality built and comes with an affordable price tag. The only apparent drawback is the additional expense as it does not come with cymbals or hardware to setup. You will have to buy those separately. If you choose to buy this drum kit, do look out for the snare drumhead because in some sets it has been reported to be very weak and broke down after a few weeks’ time.

5. Mapex Voyager

Mapex Voyager is another entry level 5 piece drum kit from Mapex. These drum kits uses poplar for its shells and snares, and are available in durable Road Tuff finishes. Double braced hardware and cymbals are included in the overall package. The sound of Mapex Voyager is very bold and after extra tuning is becomes more sustained. The kit is responsive and versatile, offering tones which are more focused rather than booming. It comes a striking price tag for those with a low budget.

4. Sonix

Sonix Beginner 5-Piece Drum Kit – Standard Package

The Sonix drum kit is intended to be a great start up drum kit for novice drummers. It comes with cymbals, hardware, a stool and sticks as well. The drum kit is constructed from poplar wood and features a new lug design of lower mass. Remo UT pinstripes styled heads are used for the toms and bass drum and s single ply UT head for the snare. You’ll find out that tuning of this kit is very easy as compared to other drums. The sound of the snare drum is sharp and crisp while the toms deliver an impeccable performance which is free from all overtones. The UT heads make this all possible at a very reasonable price range. The Sonix kit has great value for money with nothing less than roaring sounds.

3. Yamaha – GigMaker 5-Piece Drum Kits with 600 Series Hardware – GM2F56 BIG

Moving up the list, we have the new Yamaha GigMaker drum kit. Ideal for a beginner or intermediate drummer, this kit comes with a glitter finish, which is quite eye catching on its own, but wait there is more to it than just that. It features hex tom ball joints making the kit extremely durable.  The material used is of high quality ensuring superior tone and distinctive sounds. This set however does not include any cymbals and tuning stability is a little shaky. Generally speaking it’s a bit pricey, but I call it a budget set instead, since it’s Yamaha (known for its quality) and for a set like this, it’s well worth it.

2. Mapex Tornado

Delivering powerful high end and ample bottom end punch is one of UK’s best sellers, the Mapex Tornado. The kit comes with improved cymbals and double braced hardware, which means that the kit is made for heavy hitting. The upgraded version of the kit includes improved stands, bass drum pedal, higher quality lugs and remo skinned heads, all of which can be still bought at the old price! The sound quality has improved due to the drum heads and new cymbals while the built allows the toms to resonate freely. The Mapex Tornado uses birch shells which are the best in terms of sonic results. The extra added lugs on the bass and tom drums making the tuning very easy, especially for the beginners. The kit is highly durable and known to be the first choice of beginner drummers.

1. CB 5 Piece Quality Starter Drum Kit

And finally the drum set, that bags the top spot on our beginners drum kits countdown list, The CB 5! The CB 5 starter drum kit has an affordable price tag and includes the basic drums, cymbals and the hardware required. The drum kit features sturdy construction and remo skins, which I advise you to rock out on till they break. And when they do, get a better remo set (such as power stroke 3 or pinstripes) and you’ll have a kit that rivals the sound of kits twice its price. It has double braced stands and upgrading the system is very cheap. Free drum sticks and a set-up guide are also in the package. The sound quality is great for its price, it is vibrant and versatile. For better performances you can upgrade the cymbals and improve the sound results.

Good luck to all the young drummers out there and in the words of the great Dennis Chambers, let the emotions flow!
