Against the Current visit dark side with Wasteland single

Pop rock trio Against the Current have released their most mature work to date with Wasteland, a brooding, dark electronic pop song. The Poughkeepsie, NY group are gearing up for the release of their debut album In Our Bones through Fueled by Ramen on May 20.

Against the Current reveal Wasteland on Youtube

Against the Current produced a lyric video for Wasteland on Youtube, which is where the group found much of their early success. Their 2014 single Gravity clocked up 12 million views on the site despite the group not having released an full-length at the time. With frontwoman Chrissy Costanza oozing star power, it’s no surprise their clips have caused such a stir.

Lyrically, Wasteland covers substance abuse and destructive relationships, and it’s Costanza’s finest performance to date. The song is driven by delay-soaked guitars and undulating synthesizers. It sounds a little like Taylor Swift on a three-day bender mixed with the dark electronic rock sound of PVRIS. It’s certainly a big step forward for the band, whose earlier EPs were more firmly in pop rock, and even pop-punk territory.

New album In Our Bones on the way

Against the Current now has In Our Bones available for preorder in digital and CD format. The album also features singles Running With the Wild Things and Runaway. The former has been given a video clip which sees the band get up to a range of criminal hijinks before ending up in jail. It’s a high energy, anthemic rock song that will sound more familiar to fans of the older material. Runaway has been given the lyric video treatment. The song is a hook-laden pop rock affair with a positive vibe, which offsets the darkness of Wasteland.

With such contrast shown in the singles so far, it’ll be very interesting to see how the band uses their debut full-length to explore some new territory. Those who take up the preorder will be able to access all three of the early release songs straight away.

The band don’t intend to rest on the laurels after In Our Bones is released. They’re booked to get out on the road for a month and a half straight for the Vans Warped Tour, which kicks off on June 25 in San Antonio, TX.
