Metallica drop second Hardwired to Self-Destruct vid: Moth Into Flame
Metallica just dropped what might be their best track in 20 years: Moth Into Flame. It’s the second single from their upcoming 10th studio album Hardwired… to Self-Destruct. The new cut has got all the ingredients required for a classic Metallica song: Biting rhythm guitars, tons of wild harmonies and a commanding vocal performance from James Hetfield.
Now, granted Metallica haven’t put up much competition in the last 20 years. St Anger was widely panned and Death Magnetic was hamstrung by a brickwalled mix. Still, it’s great to see Metallica back on the right track. It’s pretty much how I imagined Metallica should sound like 2016: Mixing the power of their early material with the melodic songwriting of their later work.
Metallica tap Muse media manager for Moth Into Flame official video
The Moth Into Flame video was directed by Muse’s media manager Tom Kirk. It’s an improvement on the lo-fi video of first single Hardwired. The only thing that brings the track down a notch is Kirk Hammett’s solo. He adds some tasty licks throughout the song but the solo itself is nothing we haven’t heard before. It seems 2016 is not a good year for Kirk as the solo in Hardwired was also canned by fans. Well, at least he’s doing solos nowadays…
Metallica releasing Hardwired… to Self-Destruct on November 18
Hardwired… to Self-Destruct is due out on November 18. The two-disc release is essentially Metallica’s first double album since Load and Reload were cut into two releases. Fans can expect over 80 minutes of music over 12 tracks. Metallica have also arranged an exciting prospect for the three disc deluxe edition. This will include three covers of classic rockers, namely Dio (Ronnie Rising Medley), Deep Purple (When a Blind Man Cries) and Iron Maiden (Remember Tomorrow). There’s also nine live songs and a studio version of 2014 single Lords of Summer. Most deluxe albums are only for completionists but the third disc does sound like quite an interesting collection.
Metallica gave fans the following update today along with the single announcement:
“Hardwired…To Self-Destruct was produced by Greg Fidelman, along with James and Lars. It is available for pre-order in a variety of configurations including 12 songs on a double CD, vinyl, digital download. We are just getting started, so keep watching this space for more information, more tour dates and just in general, more Metallica!! IT’S ON!”
American and European Metallica tour dates coming up
So far Metallica have booked four US dates in September/October, followed by five South American shows in October/November. The band will also head to Lars Ulrich’s homeland Denmark for a pair of Copenhagen dates in February 2017. It’s a safe bet that much more extensive touring is planned in support of the Hardwired… to Self-Destruct release.
