Privacy Policy

This site uses cookies – small text files that are placed on your machine to help the site provide a better user experience. In general, cookies are used to retain user preferences, store information for things like shopping carts, and provide anonymised tracking data to third party applications like Google Analytics. As a rule, cookies will make your browsing experience better.

However, you may prefer to disable cookies on this site and on others. The most effective way to do this is to disable cookies in your browser or by using plugins. We suggest consulting the Help section of your browser or taking a look at the About Cookies website which offers guidance for all modern browsers.

Below will explain a bit about your privacy in our hands and also the 3rd party services we use. Any other questions that haven’t been answered here can be asked on via our contact form.

Our website contains some affiliate marketing links, which means we get paid commission on sales of those products or services we write about. Our editorial content is not influenced by advertisers or affiliate partnerships.

Skimlinks does use Third Party cookies to collect non-Personally Identifiable Information relating to Users. This non-Personally Identifiable Information is used by Skimlinks to optimize the performance and yield of the Service, to provide comprehensive reporting to Merchants, and to provide aggregate reporting to Publishers for the purpose of helping them optimize their content and marketing for Merchants. Non-Personally Identifiable Information is anonymous and cannot generally be used to identify a specific person.

If you wish to opt out of Skimlinks affiliate marketing links it’s very easy and you can do it here.

Banner Ads

3rd Party Cookies are present from Adverts embedded via Google Adsense, however they are non-personalised in our settings. This means they will not use Third Party Cookies to personalise Ads based on browsing behaviour. They will still use cookies for ‘Fraud Prevention’ and other things so it’s not really very innocent on Google’s front.

Our website uses Google Adsense ads across posts and pages. Usually these are served according to the cookies stored from other sites you have visited. For example if you have viewed a website on Yamaha guitars then the Ads on our website will display Adverts related to guitars or specifically Yamaha.

This page from Google explains how you can opt out and control the information Google receives.

On-site Ads

A new feature we offer for advertisers to post Ads on our site that are hosted locally. These only track clicks and no other user information! We would love to switch entirely to this option if there was enough interest.

Measuring our visitors

The information we collect from analytics helps us understand what parts of our sites are doing well, how people arrive at our site and so on. Like most websites, we use this information to make our website better. We measure visitors to our website using Matomo. This records what pages you view within our site, how you arrived at our site (Direct, Via Search Term or Referral) and some basic device information such as Device Model, OS, GeoLocation based on Language, Screen Size etc. All of that information is anonymous – so we don’t know who you are; just that somebody visited our site. We’ve left Google Analytics in order to become more privacy conscious, your IPs have been anonymized like this: 192.168.x.x.

We respect your privacy, therefore we’ve set Matomo so we are not collecting any personal data and thus do not need to ask for consent. However, we honour the browser ‘Do Not Track’ functionality by default!

We may send you email notifications which you have specifically requested (such as newsletters). You have the ability to opt out of any of this communication at any time. Your emails are stored on StableHost servers in the US within our WordPress CMS. This data is not transmitted to any other parties other than our administration.

For comment Subscriptions we use a 3rd Party paid service called Replyable which sends updates via Email. They use a service called MailGun which will store logs for 30 days in US servers.

We will never provide your personal information or email address to any third parties except where they are specifically employed to help deliver our own services, as detailed above.

Updates to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time-to-time, particularly as technology changes. You can always check this page for the latest version. We may also notify you of changes to our privacy policy by email.
