The android smartphone and tablet market is being swamped with newer and better models all the time. Some time ago, it was the big players like Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Sony, etc. bringing on the high end smartphones that cost a lot. They still do cost upwards of $500 if you are looking at their flagship models. Many new companies have popped up recently that have brought the revolution of flagship killers. It all started with a bunch of companies in China making smartphones with specs better than the flagship models from the bigger well known companies for 1/3rd of the cost. Today, we are reviewing the ZTE Nubia Z7 Phablet.
Build and specs
ZTE Nubia Z7 comes in an all plastic body. The back cover is matte black and thus, does not attract any finger prints. There are usual volume and unlock buttons on the sides, a USB port on the bottom left bezel and the 3.5mm audio jack on the top right bezel. The back cover has rounded edges and a soft matte finish which feels quite comfortable to use. Apart from that, the corners are rounded as well. The loud speaker is situated on the backside of the device and has a slit to let the sound out.
The screen size is 5.5 inches diagonally which makes this phone quite large as compared to many other phones and it supports Quad HD resolution or also known as 2K resolution. There is also a nice red home button at the bottom which glows when the phone is unlocked. The camera on the back has a red rim which appears to be eye-catching. The camera lens is flat and does not come outward. Thus, the phone sits flat on the table.
Speaking of the camera, it comes with a 13 mega pixel sensor, which has become quite a norm these days. What would matter is whether it produces good images with accurate colour reproduction and good dynamic range. It is capable of recording video at 4K resolution.
The back cover easily comes off, but you will not find easy access to the battery. To access it, a bunch of screws need to be removed and a secondary plastic cover needs to be ripped off. Once that is removed, you will see that the battery is enormous, rated at 3000mAh. It occupies a very large area which is quite assuring that it will last a whole day of usage. We will not go much into the details of the internal circuitry.
Nubia Z7 comes with a dual sim slot, unfortunately there is no SD card slot to expand your memory. It comes with 32GB internal memory and that is all you have got.
The Snapdragon 801 Quad core CPU, which also happens to be pretty brand new chip that is loaded in many of the new smartphones, is also loaded into Nubia Z7 clocked at 2.5GHz. Along with it is the Adreno 330 GPU which drives massive 2K resolution display. There is 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM to let the CPU do all the stuff that you ask.
With all high end CPU, GPU and RAM loaded into this beast, the Android OS works very smooth on this smartphone. To add some eye candy, ZTE has loaded some nice UI animations to make use of the powerful GPU. All the games out there work perfectly fine without any glitches on the Nubia Z7. Playing 4K video is no problem whatsoever. The screen being 2K resolution, 1080p movies scale perfectly and appear to display flawlessly. There has a controversy going around on the internet regarding Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 CPU heating up, but that does not seem to be the case here. There is only slight warming up of the device when you play massive games or watch movies whole day, but that is all normal.
On the whole, this device works just the way it should and the good thing is it comes at $299 from Gearbest.com. Considering the features you get and the prices of the same product from other sites, $299 seems to be a good price.
ZTE also released two additional lower spec’d devices called ZTE Nubia Z7 Max and ZTE Nubia Z7 Mini. The Z7 Max has a 5.5 inch screen but it has a full HD (1080p) resolution as compared to Quad HD (2K resolution) on the Nubia Z7. The Nubia Z7 Mini has slightly smaller screen of 5.0 inches having a 1080p display resolution. The mini version can be a good choice for people with smaller hands or prefer a lower form factor phone.
Battery life is too too good. I write this again. TOO GOOD.
overall the UI experience is good
ZTE is becoming the new Samsung, so many new devices.
Love the look of it
