How to listen to music for free
Just about few years ago people used to buy physical copies of their favourite or anticipated music releases. There was this flourished music rental market open for business throughout the year. No one thought that such a vast, demanding market would come to collapse because of the internet! Now, as you know, you can buy your music online and download a copy on to your device. Hell, that has become too old fashioned as well! The current trend shows there is a rise in people streaming music online rather than downloading it. It is purely because more and more bandwidth is available for disposal, so why not use it? Along with this, there have been a rise in music streaming sites which allow you to listen to any song that you desire. We will go through a few of the popular ones that are out there to serve some music to your ears.
When I am looking for a good music streaming site, I look at certain features of that website which would enhance my online listening experience. First of all, I don’t want to spend money for casual listening. Secondly, I want my music free from audio advertisements or pop ups which can be annoying. Advertisements can also consume a lot of bandwidth and that can be bad thing if you stream music on your smart phone while you are connected on a mobile data network. Thirdly, I want to have the ability to create playlists consisting of my favourite songs. Based on this, I have the following websites on my list of free music streaming sites so that you can listen to music for free:
Soundcloud.com: One of the giants in the music streaming industry, estimated to serve 10 hours+ of music per minute. It started out as a music sharing website and has become one of the most used websites by artists and casual listeners. It offers lot of personalisation for a user, which is a good thing that has allowed it to become so large.
Pandora.com: It was one of the most rising streaming music websites which proved itself to be a major game changer in the music industry ever since iTunes took over. Pandora was serving music worldwide, but recent licensing scheme has restricted music to only US.
MusicNow.com: A music search engine which never gives you the “not found” error. It searched various sources and presents the music that you are looking for. We will look about this in detail in a minute.
Last.fm: One of the veterans in the music streaming category. It is now very different from what it was few years ago. In my opinion there are better websites to look for instead of last.fm.
Live365.com – A great internet radio website, but has annoying audio ads. There is great music playing all the time. Live365 has a very wide selection of genres which is why it has remained a very popular music streaming option for many people in the last few years.
The two of my most favourite websites are reviewed for you below.
MusicNow.fm is a great music streaming site. When you load the website, you are presented with some of the popular, trending songs of a huge list of artists. Just click on anyone of it and you are set. It gives you facility to login with your Google account and then create playlists of your favourite music. If you have got Last.fm account, then you can also get music recommendations on the website.
- There were no advertisements on the website.
- You can search in different sources from a single interface. (Youtube, Soundcloud, User uploads, playlists). I liked this feature very much, because you never get that annoying “not found” error. There is always something for your ears!
- Extremely simple interface and gets you listening to your music without asking you login and wasting further time.
- The only bad thing I found about this site is that it is not at all meant for smartphones. That is why, you cannot use this website when you are away from your laptop or a desktop.
Grooveshark is another great online music streaming website having an awesome interface which is easy to use and has great features which makes it very pleasant to use. Grooveshark has lets to create two types of accounts depending on who you are, an artist or a listener. A listener account can let you create playlists or broadcast your playlist through a broadcast page. Pretty useful if you like to listen to music together with your online friends. Although, an artist account is completely different. Have you ever wondered how do these music artists earn their money when all of their music is available to us for free? The answer is simple, ADVERTISEMENTS! Many artists have uploaded their entire albums and music compilations for people to listen. For every view on their page, they get some amount of money from adsense revenue sharing program. This is similar to the Youtube Partner program, although Grooveshark is a website dedicated solely to music.
- Easy to use interface with lot of features
- Ability to share your playlists with your friends
- Great website to discover new artists and explore a variety of songs
- It has an optimised interface for smartphones, which is a great thing
- Allows artists to monetize their art
- I did not find much that I would dislike except for the fact that there were advertisements which can become annoying at times
